What is a palatal expander?
A palatal expander is an orthodontic device that is used to widen the upper jaw in order to create proper space for developing adult teeth to come in. If the jaw is too narrow, it can cause breathing issues and poor sleep quality. Expansion can improve these areas, and it may even help aviod the need for extractions or surgery later.
Candidates for a palatal expander are children, typically between 6-10 years old, with crowding, a crossbite or underbite, narrow upper jaws, and/or early signs of bite imbalance. Early signs of orthodontic needs, airway concerns, mouth breathing, or sleep-disordered breathing can also be helped by an expander.
Traditionally, expanders are made out of metal and are fixed, or glued, into the mouth. However, Invisalign now offers a removable palatal expander which has many benefits!

Benefits of the Invisalign Palatal Expander (IPE)
The Invisalign palatal expander for Phase I cases is made of SmartForce technology/material and is custom 3D printed to your child's mouth. With this technology, the IPE provides a gentle pressure that expands the upper jaw over time. Unlike the traditional palatal expander, there are no metal key-turning parts or poking wires to the IPE. This Invisalign expander is removable, which also makes it easier for cleaning and better oral hygiene. The IPE is discreet and comfortable, decreasing adjustment appointments and increasing kiddos' confidence!
What to Expect with an IPE
Firstly, we will take an initial scan (with our iTero scanner -- no goopy impressions!) to design your child's custom expander.
During treatment with the expander, the patient is expected to wear it 22 hours per day, only removed for brushing and cleaning the expander. (And yes, your child will be eating with the expander in!)
Your child will have regular check-ups every few weeks with Dr. Purnomo or Dr. Yoon.
Expansion, or the expansion phase, takes a few months and is followed by a holding phase, which is when the expander is in place in the mouth without further movement to allow new bone to stabilize and grow in the expanded area. This ensures that the results stay permanent and there is no relapse.
